AMIE MACKENZIE has been living in Denver and working as an actor since graduating from The Colorado College with a degree in Math. She is a regular narrator/storyteller with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. Film credits include: John Sayles’ Silver City, Monte Miranda’s Skills Like This, and Jeanne Kopek’s Killing Kevin. When I lived on the east coast, I once saw Pina Bausch’s deeply strange company at BAM and was so inspired, so transported.  I wondered why this sense of humor and relationship was so absent from most dance performances.

Dawn and Garrett of BNC make dance that’s weird and silly and sexy and thoroughly engaging. Even my beau likes their work.  And his idea of a good time is a mosh pit.

Tonight they’ll be making cameos in “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.”  If you’ve not yet seen the show, come down and see these two beautiful humans.

Bill was born and raised in New York City, on the Upper East Side, in the jazzy, fizzy 1950s. His parents took a laissez-faire view of child-rearing, and gave Bill complete freedom to explore the world on his own. Thus, at 10-years-old, Bill was riding subways and cabs, sneaking into clubs, soaking up New York’s last golden age. When he had company, it was often his sister and her boss, Walter Winchell, who took him on their late-night rounds.

Fearing the city life was perhaps too enticing, Bill was sent away to boarding school when he was 12. Then on to the Lawrenceville School, then college at Wesleyan University, where he majored in English Lit.

Upon graduating, Bill lit out for Denver, where he opened a bar/restaurant, the Great Divide. But soon Bill was homesick. So he returned to the East Coast and took a position on the dean’s staff at Manhattanville College.

The travel bug bit in 1976, so Bill spent two years on a great adventure – roaming across Western Europe and Africa. After two years, suffering the lingering effects of malaria and malaise, he returned to the Colorado mountains, and another stint in the restaurant-bar business.

In 1983, Bill moved back to Denver and tried his hand at journalism. He caught on at the Rocky Mountain News, as nightlife columnist, then society columnist, then city columnist. In 1996 he was lured away by the Denver Post, where he’s still the paper’s featured city columnist.

Bill has also been a fixture on Denver television for nearly 20 years.
